Senior citizens are the backbone of our society. They bring wisdom and experience to guide younger generations, preserve cultural history, nurture their family and community members, and bridge generational gaps. In challenging times, seniors provide a vital sense of continuity and stability. Given the invaluable role seniors have played in laying the groundwork for our thriving modern world, now, as they age, it’s crucial that we provide them with the support and care they deserve.
Seniors often require regular care, support to combat loneliness, and assistance with essential tasks like housekeeping and food shopping. Over the years, Jersey Cares has empowered volunteers to support the needs of thousands of seniors in New Jersey through a variety of impactful initiatives.

Many seniors living alone or in care facilities often experience loneliness and social isolation, which Jersey Cares volunteers work to alleviate through programs like Pet Therapy, BINGO Time, and the Senior Pen Pal Program. In Pet Therapy, volunteers bring their dogs, cats, or other furry friends to senior centers, offering socio-emotional support and eliciting positive emotions to help combat loneliness. BINGO Time provides a fun, interactive activity that fosters social connections between seniors and volunteers. Additionally, the Senior Pen Pal Program allows volunteers to exchange heartfelt letters with seniors over several months, providing regular companionship and emotional support.

In addition to providing socio-emotional support, Jersey Cares volunteers deliver essential services to seniors. Programs like the Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Market in Newark offer food-insecure seniors and their families regular access to healthy food resources. Furthermore, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Jersey Cares launched the Senior Shoppers Program to assist isolated seniors who were especially vulnerable to the virus. With it being unsafe for them to leave their homes, accessing regular groceries became a significant challenge. To safeguard these seniors from exposure, hundreds of Jersey Cares volunteers stepped in to shop for and deliver groceries directly to their doors. These volunteers dedicated over 3,925 hours of service, fulfilling 1,275 grocery orders valued at $195,000.

As we reflect on the profound impact of senior citizens and the essential role they play in our society, it is clear that supporting and caring for them is not just a duty but a privilege. Through dedicated programs and the selfless efforts of volunteers, Jersey Cares continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of seniors, ensuring they receive the respect, care, and connection they deserve.
