The hustle of life can be both relentless and overwhelming. Balancing work, school, family caregiving, and myriad other responsibilities, we each confront daily challenges that demand our attention and effort. This leaves us with little time to pause and reflect on the greater challenges facing our communities.

The third Monday of January, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day (MLK Day), not only provides us with a moment to reflect on the crucial challenges within our communities, but also serves as a catalyst, sparking us to actively address and tackle these issues.
As a nationally recognized holiday, MLK Day for some may be an opportunity to enjoy a day away from work. We encourage you to seize this opportunity, gather those you care about and turn it into a “day-on” while reflecting on Dr. King’s timeless question: “what are you doing for others?”

Since 2009, Jersey Cares has been honored to organize an annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service in New Jersey, empowering tens of thousands of our state’s residents to honor Dr. King’s legacy through meaningful acts of service. January 19th and 20th, 2025, in partnership with AmeriCorps, Jersey Cares will mobilize over 1,500 volunteers across dozens of impactful projects, creating lasting change in communities statewide.
We invite all New Jerseyans to discover their unique way to serve this MLK Day. With opportunities for all ages, interests, and abilities, Jersey Cares makes it easy to make a difference. From packing winter coats to writing greeting cards for refugee families, MLK Day is the perfect time to support the causes that inspire you.

Dr. King’s words remind us: “You don’t have to have a college degree to serve… You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love.” MLK Day encourages everyone, regardless of background, to contribute meaningfully to their community while deepening their connection to the causes that matter most—whether addressing homelessness, food insecurity, education access, or veterans’ issues.
Above all, MLK Day unites us in the spirit of service. Volunteering alongside people from diverse backgrounds fosters understanding and reminds us that working together toward a common goal is a powerful force for change. This MLK Day, we encourage you to take a moment to pause from the hustle of everyday life and step into the legacy of service and unity that Dr. King envisioned. Join Jersey Cares in making a tangible difference in our communities by signing up for a volunteer project. Whether big or small, your actions have the power to bring warmth, hope, and change to those who need it most. Let’s honor Dr. King’s dream together—because the most impactful way to celebrate his legacy is through joining together to serve.
